                         IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
              (978) Aidamina / TAC +09 00974 event on 1998 November 2/3
                             visible from central Europe

    Summary
    In the night November 2/3, 1998 will be occulted 11.6 mag star by a 83km asteroid (978) Aidamina. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff astrometry for asteroid and TAC star position. Although the asteroid positions permit to get a quite good path location, uncertain star position may shift the path up to 0.3" from the path given in chart. Observers in the whole central Europe and nearby areas may have a chance for this event. The star is quite faint and larger telescopes (I suppose at least 20cm) should be used, however the magnitude drop is still large and may be easily observed.

    The event at one glimpse:
     * date and approx. UT time of event: November, 3, 1998 @ 0:29 UT
     * magnitude of target star: 11.6
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 2.5
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 6.3
     * path description: Shadow moves from NE to SW over Poland ~0:28:30 UT,
    Czech Republic ~0:29:00 UT, Austria, northern Italy ~0:30:00 UT and Corse to
    Africa. Due to uncertain star position also observers in Germany, Switzerland,
    Slovakia, Hungary, SE France and mediterrian coast of Spain should still
    try to observe the event.

    The occultation path:
     * approximate width [km]: 90
     * uncertainty [path widths]: 5
     * map: attached
     * remarks: The large uncertainity is given by uncertain star position.
    Orbit uncertainity itself gives only about 1.5 path width uncertainity.

    Data for the target star:
     * name: TAC +09 00974 = GSC 0673.0771
     * constellation: Taurus
     * J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 04h 32m 54.338s; +09o 23' 42.96"
     * position source: TAC
     * estimated accuracy ["]: 0.3"
     * V mag [mag]: 11.6
     * remarks: 7.1 degree south of alpha Tauri (Aldebaran). There is
    11.1 mag star 2.5' distant in p.a. 317 which can serve as a check star.

    Data for the minor planet:
     * general information:
         mumber, name: (978) Aidamina
         approx. diameter [km]: 83
     * orbital information
         orbit source: Bowell
         source of used astrometry: USNO/Flagstaff (Ron Stone)
         number of used observations: 8 USNO
         number of rejected observations: 1 (from Oct. 24.4)
         time covered by the observations: 1998 9 17 - 1998 10 28
         rms residuals ["] (RA,DE): 0.07", 0.06"
         estimated positional accuracy at epoch of event ["]: 0.1"
         remarks:

    Data for the event:
     * UT date and time of least geocentric approach: 00:32:18 UT
     * uncertainty in time [s]: 40
     * approx. V mag of minor planet at event [mag]: 14.0
     * geocentric parallax of minor planet ["]: 4.698
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 2.5
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 6.3
     * apparent motion of minor planet ["/h]: 34.69
     * angular distance to moon, phase of moon [deg,%]: 47, 97%
     * remarks:
