IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
(34) Circe / PPM 145128 event on 1998, November 29
visible from Bulgaria, northern Greece, Albania,
southern Italy and Canary Islands
Summary
In the evening of November 29, 1998 will be occulted 9.8 mag star by a
118km asteroid (34) Circe. This is a final update based on USNO/Flagstaff
and TMO astrometry for asteroid and ACT star position. The updated path is
about 2 path widths south of Goffin's nominal path and about 20 seconds
earlier.
The event at one glimpse:
* date and approx. UT time of event: November, 29, 1998 @ 21:16 UT
* magnitude of target star: 9.8
* magnitude drop [mag]: 3.2
* estimated maximum duration [s]: 17.1
* path description: Path runs over Bulgaria ~21:14 UT, Albania, southern
Italy ~21:15 UT, NE tip of Sicily ~21:16 UT and then over northern part
of Tunisia ~21:17 UT, Algeria and Morocco. The path also hits Canary
Islands ~21:23 UT with Observatorio del Teide in path.
The occultation path:
* approximate width [km]: 120
* uncertainty [path widths]: 1.2
* uncertainty in time [s]: 30
* map: attached
* remarks: The uncertainities are based on expected orbit accuracy
and nominal ACT star position. Any larger displacement can be accounted
to star positional error.
Circles along the path are OCCULT exactly calculated centerline points.
Data for the target star:
* name: PPM 145128 = SAO 110234 = TYC 0036 00622 1
* constellation: Pisces
* J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 01h 55m 46.999s; +06o 42' 35.46"
* position source: ACT
* estimated accuracy ["]: 0.04"
* V mag [mag]: 9.75
* remarks: The difference in TYC and ACT position is given by completely
different proper motions. ACT proper motions agree acceptably with PPM
proper motions so ACT star position is more probable. True uncertainity
may be however larger than given nominal value. Tycho quality flag is 4.
The target star is 18' north of 7.5 mag star in the SE part of Pisces.
Saturn is 2.7 degrees NW of target star and may may help the location of
field.

Jan Manek's update
IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
(34) Circe / PPM 145128 event on 1998, November 29
visible from Bulgaria, northern Greece, Albania,
southern Italy and Canary Islands
Summary
In the evening of November 29, 1998 will be occulted 9.8 mag star by a
118km asteroid (34) Circe. This preliminary update is based on
USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for asteroid and ACT star position. The
updated path is about 2 path widths south of Goffin's nominal path and
about 30 seconds earlier.
The event at one glimpse:
* date and approx. UT time of event: November, 29, 1998 @ 21:16 UT
* magnitude of target star: 9.8
* magnitude drop [mag]: 3.2
* estimated maximum duration [s]: 17.1
* path description: not given in this preliminary note. Check the chart.
The occultation path:
* approximate width [km]: 120
* uncertainty [path widths]: 1.5
* uncertainty in time [s]: 30
* map: attached
* remarks: The uncertainities are based on expected orbit accuracy
and nominal ACT star position. They are uncertain themselves as
there is no up-to-date star position available to check the ACT value.
Circles along the path are OCCULT exactly calculated centerline points.
Data for the target star:
* name: PPM 145128 = SAO 110234 = TYC 0036 00622 1
* constellation: Pisces

* V mag [mag]: 9.75
* remarks: The difference in TYC and ACT position is given by completely
different proper motions. ACT proper motions agree acceptably with PPM
proper motions so ACT star position is more probable. True uncertainity
may be however larger than given nominal value. Tycho quality flag is 4.
