IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
(790) Pretoria / TAC +13 01780 event on 1998, November 29
visible from Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain, Portugal
and also from Venezuela and Columbia
Summary
In the morning of November 29, 1998 will be occulted 9.5 mag star by a
176km asteroid (790) Pretoria. This is a final update based on
USNO/Flagstaff, TMO and Ondrejov astrometry for asteroid and USNO/Flagstaff
star position. The updated path is significantly north of Goffin's nominal
path and about 1 minute earlier. The difference is caused by both -
different star position and corrections to asteroid position. This path
runs over areas with many observers, so a good coverage may be possible (if
weather permits). Circles along the path are OCCULT exactly calculated
centerline points.
Ron Stone has kindly checked the star position on additional request to confirm the ACT position over TYC position.
The event at one glimpse:
* date and approx. UT time of event: November, 29, 1998 @ 4:09 UT
* magnitude of target star: 9.5
* magnitude drop [mag]: 4.4
* estimated maximum duration [s]: 12.6
* path description: Path runs over Bulgaria ~4:08 UT, south of former
Yugoslavia and north Albania, middle-south Italy with Rome in the
path and Napoli on the southern limit ~4:09 UT, south Corsica, Sardinia,
Balearian Islands, southern Spain ~4:10 UT with Valencia and Sevilla
in the path. Overseas the path hits Martinique and Saint Lucia in
Antilles ~4:17 UT, Venezuela with capital Caracas ~4:18 UT and Columbia
with Medellin ~4:19 UT.
!!!!!!!
Circles along the path are OCCULT exactly calculated centerline points.
!!!!!!!
The occultation path:
* approximate width [km]: 180
* uncertainty [path widths]: 0.8
* uncertainty in time [s]: 20
* map: attached for Europe and South America
* remarks: Compared to the preliminary update the time correction is about
-40 s and 1 path width south. For the time difference is mostly
responsible the new USNO star positions while for the path shift
is mostly responsible the inclusion of new minor planet positions. The
difference is however acceptable compared to the preliminary path errors.
Data for the target star:
* name: TAC +13 01780 = TYC 0758 00784 1
* constellation: Gemini
* J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 06h 45m 30.064s; +13o 20' 39.42"
* position source: USNO/Flagstaff
* estimated accuracy ["]: 0.02"
* V mag [mag]: 9.53
* remarks: USNO position proves the ACT position is better than TYC one.
The target star is 4' east of 7.3 mag star. These two stars are 27'
north of 3.3 mag star xi Gem which should be easily located.
Data for the minor planet:

IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
(790) Pretoria / TAC +13 01780 event on 1998, November 29
visible from Romania, former Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain and Portugal
Summary
In the morning of November 29, 1998 will be occulted 9.6 mag star by a
176km asteroid (790) Pretoria. This preliminary update is based on
USNO/Flagstaff, TMO and Ondrejov astrometry for asteroid and ACT star
position. The updated path is significantly north of Goffin's nominal path
and about 1.5 minutes earlier. The difference is caused by both - different
star position and corrections to asteroid position. This path runs over
areas with many observers, so a good coverage may be possible (if weather
permits).
The event at one glimpse:
* date and approx. UT time of event: November, 29, 1998 @ 4:08 UT
* magnitude of target star: 9.6
* magnitude drop [mag]: 4.3
* estimated maximum duration [s]: 12.6
* path description: not given in this preliminary note. Check the chart.
The occultation path:
* approximate width [km]: 180
* uncertainty [path widths]: 2
* uncertainty in time [s]: 30
* map: attached
* remarks: The uncertainities are uncertain themselves as there is no
up-to-date star position available to check the ACT value.
Data for the target star:
* name: TAC +13 01780 = TYC 0758 00784 1
* constellation: Gemini
* J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 06h 45m 30.070s; +13o 20' 39.43"
* position source: ACT
* estimated accuracy ["]: 0.03"
* V mag [mag]: 9.56
* remarks: The difference in TYC and ACT position is given by completely
different proper motions. True uncertainity may be larger than given
nominal value. Tycho quality flag is 4.
