                          IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
              (70) Panopaea / PPM 71626 event on 1998, December 18
           visible from Russia, Latvia, southern Sweden, northern Denmark,
                              Scotland and North Ireland

    Summary
    On the night December 18, 1998 will be occulted 9.9 mag star by a 127km asteroid (70) Panopaea. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for asteroid and ACT star position. The updated path is about 4 path widths south of Goffin's nominal path with -2 minutes time correction.

    The event at one glimpse:
     * date and approx. UT time of event: December, 18, 1998 @ 22:01 UT (Euro),
     * magnitude of target star: 9.9
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 2.7
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 8.6
     * path description: After crossing China and cetral Asia the shadow enters
         Russia ~21:58 UT, goes just north of Samara ~21:59 UT and Moscow ~22:00
         UT. Riga (Latvia) is in the path ~22:01 UT. Shaortly after path
         crosses southern Sweden, northern Denmark ~22:01:30 UT and hits Scotland
         (St. Andrews) ~22:02:30 UT and barely miss North Ireland.
         Due to uncertainities in path location observers from following areas may
         have a chance to see this occultation : Lithuania, Estonia, very south
         Finland, Baltic coast Poland and Germany, south Norway, middle and north
         U.K. and Ireland.

    The occultation path:

     * uncertainty [path widths]: 1.5
     * uncertainty in time [s]: 20
     * map: see below
     * remarks: Path uncertainities are given according to nominal star position
        errors and expected asteroid positional accuracy.
