                         IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
                    (423) Diotima/GSC 2470 00150 event on 2000 Jan 7
                       visible from Asia, northern Italy, France

    Summary

    On the evening of 2000 Jan 7 the 220 km large asteroid (423) Diotima occults the 11.5 mag star GSC 2470 00150 for observers in Asia and Europe (northern Italy, southern Switzerland, France). This is a favourable event for larger telescopes which are able to monitor a 11 mag star, because the star is high in the sky and the path is known with high precision.

    There is no significant shift of the path compared to compared to the nominal prediction of E. Goffin, but a time shift of +0.5m (times later than predicted by Goffin). Goffin's nominal prediction file has number b00_0118.ps.gz.

    Jan Manek's update

                         IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
             (423) Diotima / GSC 2470.0150 event on January 7, 2000
                 visible from Asia, Romania, N of frm.Yugoslavia,
                      N Italy, Switzerland and south France

    Summary

    In the night January 7/8, 1999 a faint 11.4 mag star GSC 2470.0150 will be occulted by a large 217 km asteroid (423) Diotima. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and USNO/Flagstaff star position.

    The updated path shows no shift with time ~0.3 minutes later compared to Goffin's nominal prediction.

    The path of this occultation runs over several asian states (see map) and after crossing Balck Sea the path enters Romania and north Bulgaria at ~21:41 UT, very south Hungary, north of former Yugoslavia, north Italy ~21:42 UT, Switzerland and south France.

    The path uncertainity is only 1 path width, within this error is also whole Bulgary, Hungary, Austria, Italy down to Roma, southern Germany, whole Switzerland, all France south of Paris and NW Spain.

    Be avare that magnitude drop should be only about 1.0 magnitude - this is close to the limit of visual observations, but any other technique as video recording, drift scan observation or IOTA occultation camera should provide very good results.

    The star is rather faint having 11.4 mag (larger telesopes !) and it is still somewhat uncertain so the magnitude drop may be smaller (or larger) than given 1.0 mag.

    The event at one glimpse:
     * date and approx. UT time of event: January 7, 2000 @ 21:42 UT (Euro)
     * magnitude of target star: 11.4
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 1.0
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 15.7
     * path description: given above

    The occultation path:

     * uncertainty [path widths]: 1.0
     * uncertainty in time [s]: 15
     * map: attached
     * remarks: Path uncertainities are given according to nominal star

     * remarks: Only single position by Ron Stone is available with estimated
         accuracy given above. Magnitude given in GSC in more closely a V
         magnitude than B magnitude. Edwin Goffin supposed GSC magnitude is B
         mag and therefore there is the difference of magnitude drop from his
         nominal prediction.

         Target star is in NW Cancer, about 7.6 degrees NE of 1.2 mag star beta
         Gem = Pollux or 8.9 degrees east of 2.0 mag star alpha Gem = Castor
         (almost exactly on the same declination line, t.s. is only 13' south).
         There is 9.6 mag star SAO 60684 only 9.3' NW of target star.
