    Summary

    In the evening of February 2, 2002 a faint 11.0 mag star TYC 4742-00609-1 will be occulted by a 69 km asteroid (1051) Merope. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and OFXB astrometry for the asteroid and UCAC star position.

    The updated path shows ~0.3" east shift with time ~1.0 minutes later compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.

    Updated path runs over Sardinia and Corse ~20:38.1 UT, north Italy ~20:38.6 UT, Austria ~20:38.9 UT, Czechia ~20:39 UT just east of Prague, Poland ~20:39.4 UT between Poznan and Wroclaw, W Lithuania and W Latvia ~20:39.7 UT, Estonia ~20:39.8 UT, NW Russia just east of Petersburg ~20:40 UT. Much larger area is covered taking uncertainty into consideration. Please check the path chart for details.

    Good luck !

    The event at one glimpse:
     * date and approx. UT time of event: February 2, 2002 @ 20:39 UT (Euro)
     * magnitude of target star: 11.0
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 4.7
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 6.5
     * path description: given above
     * Goffin's original chart reference: A02_0244

    The occultation path:
     * approximate ground width [km]: 70
     * uncertainty [path widths]: 3.3
     * uncertainty in time [s]: 25
     * map: below
     * remarks: Path uncertainties are given according to nominal star
        position errors and expected asteroid positional accuracy.

    Data for the target star:
     * name: TYC 4742-00609-1
     * constellation: Eridanus
     * J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 04h 31m 29.4089s; -05o 30' 28.766"
     * position source: UCAC combined with Tycho-2 proper motion
     * estimated accuracy ["]: 0.01" (0.010", 0.005")
     * V mag [mag]: 10.98
     * B-V [mag]: +0.29
     * remarks:
        Recent UCAC position was provided by Marion and Norbert Zacharias.
        Target star is in NE Eridanus, 11 degrees west of 0.3 mag star beta Orionis =
        = SAO 131907. Target star is northern one in pair, southern star is ~0.2 mag
        fainter, 32" south of target, so this is very fine reference star for visual
        observers.

    Close finding chart (prepared in GUIDE7):
     * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross
     * field is 3.0x3.0 degrees
     * limiting magnitude is 13.0
     * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers
     * remarks: this time two charts are given, second one is more detailed, showing
        also clearly the southern star in pair.
