                        IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
              (56) Melete / TYC 0797-00215-1 on February 23/24, 2002
visible from SW Italy, NE Sicily, Corse, France from SE to NW,
                           SW England and Ireland

    Summary

In the night of February 23/24, 2002 a 10.7 mag star TYC 0797-00215-1 will be occulted by a 117 km asteroid (56) Melete. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and UCAC star position.

The updated path shows ~3 path width north shift with time ~0.3 minutes later compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.

Updated path runs over SW Italy and NE Sicily ~01:46.7 UT, NE Sarde ~01:47.3 UT, Corse ~01:47.5 UT, France from SE to NW with Marseille and Nice in path ~01:47.7 UT, Limoges and Clermont-Ferrand ~01:48.2 UT, Tours and Nantes ~01:48.5 UT. Just north of limit is Lyon, Grenoble and Orleans, just south of limit is Brest. Cornwall in SW England ~01:49.1 UT and Ireland ~01:49.6 UT follow. Much larger area is covered taking uncertainty into consideration. Please check the path chart for details.

3 sigma uncertainty is 0.85 path width only, making it very interesting event for France observers with many Audine cameras capable of drift scanning.

Clear sky and good luck !!!
