IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for (1297) Quadea / TYC 1342-00814-1 on April 8, 2002 visible from S France, Sardinia, S Italy/Sicily, NE Egypt, Sinai and Saudi Arabia Summary
In the evening of April 8, 2002 a faint 11.2 mag star TYC 1342-00814-1 will be occulted by a 66 km asteroid (1297) Quadea. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid and combined Tycho-2/UCAC star position.
The updated path shows ~6 path widths north shift with time ~0.4 minutes later compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.
Updated path runs over south France with Toulouse on north limit around ~19:28.4 UT and Perpignan in path few seconds later. Follows north Sardinia ~19:29 UT, NE Sicily and very SW Italy - area around Messina strait around 19:29.4 UT, NE Egypt (area of delta of Nil) with Alexandria and Cairo around 19:30.4 UT. Few seconds later follows Sinai peninsula and deserts in Saudi Arabia ~19:31 UT. Within uncertainties is also NE Spain, large part of south France, Corse, large part of Italy with Rome, S Greece and Crete. Please check the path chart for details.
There is only one complication - the occultation is expected to last only ~3 seconds.
Clear sky and good luck !!!

Target star is in mid-east Gemini, only 2.7 degrees south of 3.0 mag star epsilon Geminorum = SAO 78682. Location should be really easy, bright Jupiter shines 2.5 degreed NE of target. Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful. Close finding chart (prepared in GUIDE7): * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross * field is 2.0x2.0 degrees * limiting magnitude is 13.0 * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers * remarks:
