    Summary

    In the night of June 25/26, 2002 a faint 11.4 mag star TYC 0503-00797-1 will be occulted by a large 165 km asteroid (185) Eunike. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and recent UCAC star position.

    The updated path shows ~2.5 path width south shift with time ~1.3 minutes later compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.

    Updated path runs over Russia from northeast to southwest with Kazan on north limit and Kuybyshev on south limit ~20:57.7 UT, Ukraine from NE to SW with Kharkov south of central line ~20:59.9 UT and Kiev just north of path limit ~21:00.5 UT, Moldavia ~21:01.1 UT, northwest Romania ~21:01.8 UT, southeast Hungary ~21:02.0 UT, frm. Yugoslavia around 21:02.5 UT with Beograd in path an zagreb on north limit, central Italy with Rome on south limit ~21:03.6 UT, Corse ~21:04.0 UT and finally Spain from NE to SW with Barcelona in path ~21:04.5 UT and Madrid slightly later at ~21:05.0 UT, and Portugal with Lisabon ~21:05.5 UT at low altitude. Please check the path chart for details.

    Low uncertainty makes it good event on one hand, on the other hand star is faint having only 11.4 mag and drop in brightness is 1.0 mag only. Complication may be also almost full Moon ~32 degrees away, but fortunately it will be low in the sky. Clear sky and good luck !!!

     * remarks:
        Recent UCAC position was provided by Marion and Norbert Zacharias.
        Target star is in mideast Aquila, about 6.7 degrees north of 3.3 mag star theta Aquilae = SAO 144150.
        Only 2.6 degrees NE of target is 9.5 mag star PPM 169469.
        Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields
        the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful about this.
