                        IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
              (241) Germania / TYC 1849-01114-1 on August 18/19, 2002
          visible from NW Algeria, Sardegna, middle Italy, frm.Yugoslavia,
                    SE Hungary, W Romania, Ukraine and Russia

    Summary

    In the night of August 18/19, 2002 a faint 11.7 mag star TYC 1849-01114-1 will be occulted by a 169 km asteroid (241) Germania. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff for the asteroid and recent UCAC star position.

    The updated path shows ~3 path widths south shift with time ~0.8 minutes later compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.

    Updated path runs over NW Algeria at low altitudes ~0:48.7 UT, followed by Sardegna ~0:48.9 UT, middle Italy with Rome on central line ~0:49.0 UT, frm.Yugoslavia ~0:49.2, SE Hungary ~0:49.3 UT, west Romania ~0:49.4 UT, Ukraine with Kiev on central line ~0:49.7 UT and Russia with Kazan and Kuybyshev close to limits ~0:50.3 UT during morning twilight.
    PLEASE NOTE that target star is NW component of uncataloged 9" binary star (see below), for those not able to resolve the pair the brightness drop will be dependent on real brightness of the SE component - for equal pair it is ~0.7 magnitudes. Fainter SE component means brightness drop larger than 0.7 mag and vice versa. Please check the path chart for details.

    Clear sky and good luck !!!

    The event at one glimpse:
     * date and approx. UT time of event: August 19, 2002 @ 00:49 UT
     * magnitude of target star: 11.7
     * magnitude drop [mag]: 1.9
     * estimated maximum duration [s]: 6.4
     * path description: given above
     * Goffin's original chart reference: A02_0823

    The occultation path:
     * approximate ground width [km]: 220
     * uncertainty [path widths]: 1.6
     * uncertainty in time [s]: 7
     * map: below
     * remarks: Path uncertainties are given according to nominal star
        position errors and expected asteroid positional accuracy.

    Data for the target star:
     * name: TYC 1849-01114-1
     * constellation: Taurus
     * J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 05h 01m 44.3096s; +25o 35' 32.955"
     * position source: UCAC combined with Tycho-2 proper motion
     * estimated accuracy ["]: 0.07" (0.025", 0.050")
     * V mag [mag]: 11.66
     * B-V [mag]: +0.84
     * remarks:
        Recent UCAC position was provided by Marion and Norbert Zacharias.
        Target star is in north Taurus, about 6.3 degrees southwest of 1.7 mag star beta Tauri = SAO 77168.
        !!! IMPORTANT !!!
        Target star is NW component of an uncataloged double star. SE component is on
        DSS-2 (red band) slightly fainter than target; their separation is ~9". Therefore also UCAC
        astrometry is somewhat affected as can bee seen on estimated accuracy, which is ~5 times worse
        compared to a single star values. GSC flags this entry as non-star and GSC position refers
        to photocenter of the pair.
        Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields
        the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful about this.

    Close finding chart (prepared in GUIDE7):
     * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross
     * field is 3.0x3.0 degrees
     * limiting magnitude is 13.0
     * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers
     * remarks: Second chart is a RealSky image showing the double star in detail.
