IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for (287) Nephthys / TYC 1397-01488 on June 3/4, 2003 visible from S France, NE Spain and Sardinia Summary
In the night of June 3/4, 2003 a faint 11.3 mag star TYC 1397-01488 will be occulted by a 70 km asteroid (287) Nephthys. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and recent UCAC star position.
The updated path shows ~1.0 path width north shift with no time correction compared to Eric Frappa's nominal prediction.
Updated path runs over S France around 21:53.9 UT, NE Spain ~21:54.0 and Sardinia ~21:54.1 UT. Please check the path chart for details.
Please pay attention to possible satellite of Nephthys (as mentioned by Jean Lecacheux) so observers up to ~500km from main body path should try to observe. On assumption that satellite's size is ~1/10 of main body, the duration will be very short; under 0.2 second. Video observations or CCD drift scans are highly desirable in this case.
Orbit used for this update is the same as the one used for April 28th event which had no occultation on central line. It is hard to say what was the reason of the shift and where to try this time. If I should expect any shift - then probably a south shift within uncertainty, but please don't shoot at me ...
Clear sky and good luck !!!
The event at one glimpse: * date and approx. UT time of event: June 3, 2003 @ 21:54 UT (Europe) * magnitude of target star: 11.3 * magnitude drop [mag]: 2.2 * estimated maximum duration [s]: 2.2 * path description: given above * Goffin's original chart reference: none The occultation path: * approximate ground width [km]: 110 * uncertainty [path widths]: 1.0 * uncertainty in time [s]: 2 * map: below * remarks: Path uncertainties are given according to nominal star position errors and expected asteroid positional accuracy. Data for the target star: * name: TYC 1397-01488 * constellation: Cancer * J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 09h 01m 36.1437s; +18o 46' 51.608" * position source: recent UCAC position combined with Tycho-2 proper motion * estimated accuracy ["]: 0.03" (0.02", 0.02") * V mag [mag]: 11.27 * B-V [mag]: +0.37 * remarks: Recent UCAC position was provided by Marion and Norbert Zacharias. Target star is in middle Cancer, just east of open cluster M44 or 1.2 degree north of Jupiter. Should be easy to find. There is 11.0 mag star just 1.6' north of target star. !!! IMPORTANT !!! Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful about this. Close finding chart (prepared in GUIDE8): * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross * field is 3.0x3.0 degrees * limiting magnitude is 12.5 * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers * remarks: Second chart is 30' blowup to show correctly the target star in the field.
