                         IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
              (545) Messalina / TYC 4933-00970-1 = SAO 138253 on March 20/21, 2004
visible from Asia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, N Italy,
                               SW Switzerland and middle France

    Summary

In the night of March 20/21, 2004 a bright 8.7 mag star TYC 4933-00970-1 = SAO 138253 will be occulted by a 115 km asteroid (545) Messalina. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff, TMO and OAC astrometry for the asteroid and Tycho-2 star position.

The updated path shows ~0.5 path width north shift with no time shift compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.

Updated path runs over Asia 21:49-21:54 UT, Turkey around 21:55 UT, Bulgaria ~21:55.9 UT, Serbia ~21:56.2 UT, Bosnia ~21:56.5 UT, Croatia ~21:56.7 UT, N Italy ~21:57.1 UT, SW Switzerland ~21:57.4 UT and middle France ~21:57.7 UT. Please check the path chart for details.

Here is current station list for European cities and observatories plus other sites.
If you would like to have your station listed with other observetories and sites, send me your request using the structure descripted here

Target star is brighter component of 11" wide pair STF 1548, fainter component is at PA 127° and brightness 9.8 mag. Hopefully this fact didn't affected the accuracy of Tycho-2 astrometry too much.

Clear sky and good luck !!!

    Finding charts (prepared in GUIDE8):
     * occulted star is in center - labeled with cross
     * labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers
     * (smaller) square box shows 30' field in all wider field charts
     * (larger) square box shows 3° field in wide field charts
     * remarks:
Target star is in south Leo, about 7.0 degrees southwest of 3.6 mag star beta Virginis = SAO 119076 or
       41' southeast of 4.7 mag star 87 Leonis = SAO 138238.
       !!! IMPORTANT !!!
Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields
the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful about this.
