IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for
(405) Thia / TYC 1196-00084-1 = SAO 92248 on December 17/18, 2004
visible from SE Ukraine, Moldavia, Romania, SE Hungary,
frm. Yugoslavia, S Italy, Sicilia and E Tunisia
Summary
In the night of December 17/18, 2004 a bright 9.2 mag star TYC 1196-00084-1 = SAO 92248 will be occulted by a 129 km asteroid (405) Thia. This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and UCAC2 star position.
The updated path shows ~2 path width E shift with time ~0.6 minutes earlier compared to Edwin Goffin's nominal prediction.
Updated path runs over SE Ukraine at low altitudes ~23:39 UT, Moldavia ~23:39.8 UT, Romania ~23:40 UT, SE Hungary ~23:40.3 UT, frm. Yugoslavia ~23:41 UT, S Italy ~23:42.1 UT, Sicilia ~23:43.2 UT and E Tunisia ~23:44 UT. Please check the path chart for details.

* magnitude of target star: 9.2
* magnitude drop [mag]: 4.8
* estimated maximum duration [s]: 21.5
* approx. V mag of minor planet at event [mag]: 14.0
* geocentric parallax of minor planet ["]: 3.324
* apparent motion of minor planet ["/h]: 11.26
* angular distance to moon, phase of moon [deg,%]: 36, 42%
* Goffin's original chart reference: A04_1240
The occultation path with path maps:
* approximate ground width [km]: 400
* uncertainty [path widths]: 0.73
* uncertainty in time [s]: 20
* map: Overview

Finding charts (prepared in GUIDE8):
* occulted star is in center - labeled with cross
* labeled stars have indicated SAO numbers
* (smaller) square box shows 30' field in all wider field charts
* (larger) square box shows 3° field in wide field charts
* remarks:
Target star is in middle Pisces, about 6.2 degrees E of 3.6 mag eta Piscii = SAO 92484.
!!! IMPORTANT !!!
Purple stars in identification chart are so called 'non-star' objects in GSC; in dense fields
the 'non-stars' are often real stars or blends of close pairs. Be careful about this.

Data for the target star:
* name: TYC 1196-00084-1 = SAO 92248 = PPM 117046
* constellation: Pisces
* J2000 position [h,m,s; o,',"]: 01h 06m 29.4936s; +16d 36' 50.767"
* position source: UCAC2
* estimated 1-sigma accuracy ["]: 0.021" (0.014", 0.016")
* R mag [mag]: 9.22
* B-V [mag]: +0.32
* remarks: Tycho catalogue gives also parallax with large error.
Taking parallax into account shifts the path another 1/3 path width to east and another 0.1 minute earlier.
